Trevor had a fantastic career which saw him play for his hometown club Nuneaton Borough, Lincoln City, Coventry City and the Hatters. He began his career in non-league football with his hometown club Nuneaton before making a £27,500 switch to Lincoln City where he became a league player in June 1979. He went on to become a huge favourite with the Sincil Bank faithful for his mature performances as a central defender. After 171 league appearances and 7 goals, he moved to Coventry City for £100,000 on July 6th 1983. It was at Highfield Road that Trevor really made his name in football. In 8 years with the Sky Blues he made 278 league appearances, scoring 6 goals, as well as 57 appearances in other competitions, including the FA Cup. It was the FA Cup that brought Trevor the best moment of his career. Coventry reached the FA Cup final in 1987 where they played Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. A 3-2 victory saw Coventry achieve the best moment in their history and Trevor was a part of it. However, he also experienced the lows of the FA Cup when he was in the Coventry team that were beaten 2-1 by non-league Sutton United.
With Luton struggling at the bottom of the old First Division (now the Premiership) in 1991, manager David Pleat wanted some experience and he turned to Trevor and signed him for £100,000 on August 27th 1991. Trevor went straight into the side and made his Luton debut in a defeat at Arsenal. He went on to become the Luton captain but could not prevent the Hatters from slipping in the First Division in his first season at Kenilworth Road, and then also into the Second Division, but he remained captain for the next few seasons. In the 1995/96 campaign he started as Luton's first choice defender and retained the club captaincy, but he lost both roles to new signing Steve Davis within a few weeks of the season, after a shaky start. Although he still possessed great posistional skills, in his 40th year he was not surprisingly unable to completely compensate for his lack of speed in a struggling side, becoming the Hatters reserve team coach in January and effectively bringing his playing career to a close. However, before hanging up his boots, Trevor established the record as Luton's oldest ever league player when making his last appearance in February at the age of 39 years and 17 days. In a distinguished career, Trevor made 201 appearances for Luton and a total of 730 appearances for his 3 league clubs. Having been reserve team coach at Luton, Hatters boss Lennie Lawrence allowed him to leave Kenilworth Road to return to his former club Coventry where he became a first-team coach under Sky Blues manager Gordon Strachan. He remains a coach at the Premiership at the time of writing. Profile By: James Garley |
