Where Are They Now?                                   Profiles of ex-Luton players

Richie Edwards

[Click HERE to return to the Where Are They Now? index]

Height: 5 ft 08".

Weight: -

Born: Kingsbury, 05.11.1943.

Nationality: England.

International Honours: None.

Dick (Richie) Edwards played for Luton Town from 1964-1965.  He was born on 05/11/1943 and joined Luton Town from Admult in 1964 after being signed by manager George Martin.  A full-back, he made his debut for the Hatters on the last day of the 1964-65 season wearing the number 2 shirt in a 0-0 home draw with Workington in front of 2,915 spectators as the Hatters finished 21st in Division Three and were relegated.

With Luton now in Division Four, Edwards wore the number 4 shirt four matches into the following campaign as his first League appearance of the season came in a 2-1 home win over Newport County at Kenilworth Road in front of 4,899 fans, Reid with a penalty and John Moore the Hatters goal scorers.  This appearance had come after he featured in early September in a 1-1 home draw with Brighton & Hove Albion and then a 0-2 reverse at The Goldstone Ground that saw Luton go out of the League Cup.  He retained his place in the side for the next match, a 0-2 defeat at Torquay United, but he was then left out of the team for just over two months, before returning in a 1-0 home victory over Romford in an FA Cup First Round replay.

He stayed in the side for the next three League matches in a home win over Notts County (5-1) and away draws at Doncaster Rovers and Lincoln City (1-1 and 2-2 respectively).

Wearing the number 3 shirt, Edwards then played in a 2-2 draw at Corby Town in the FA Cup Second Round, and he also played in the replay as the Hatters surprisingly lost 0-1 to the minnows and went out of the competition.

Bruce Rioch: A teammate of Richie Edwards

Bruce Rioch: Played alongside Richie Edwards.

A substitute appearance followed in a 3-1 home win over Aldershot Town, and six matches later he was back in the starting XI as he held the number 8 shirt for four consecutive matches, during which time he netted his first (and only) goal for the club in a 2-2 draw at Colchester United.  He then reverted back to full-back, before a single match in midfield, and then back to full-back for a further two matches.  However, he made just two further appearances in the final six games of the campaign, one of those as a substitute.  His final game for the Hatters came in a 1-1 draw at Chester City on the last day of the season before he was allowed to join Kettering Town having made 17 League appearances and scored one goal for the club.  He had, however, helped Luton to a final position of 6th in Division Four, and he played in a team that included Luton legends Bruce Rioch, David Pleat, Graham French and John Moore

During his time with Luton Town, Richie’s main claim to fame was that David Pleat, who was also on the books at the time, broke his leg in a practice match tackle with Edwards.

Richie is now retired and, although he won't really be remembered by too many Luton Town supporters, he did play alongside some all-time Hatters greats and that can't be too bad a claim to fame!
