Steve Sedgley

Ex-Youth Team Coach
Steve Sedgley

Steve joined Luton Town in mid-October 2005 to work alongside Youth Team Coach Marvin Johnson.

Having recently obtained a UEFA coaching licence, it is hoped that Steve’s qualifications and experience as a top-flight footballer will benefit the Hatters’ young players.

Born in Enfield, Steve made over 180 first-team appearances for Spurs as a player after a £750,000 move from Coventry City in July 1989 before switching to Ipswich Town for £1 million in June 1994. Over 100 appearances followed for the Blues before the final move of his playing career, a £500,000 transfer to Wolves in July 1997, where he again made over 100 League appearances before retiring from the game in December 2000.

On joining Luton, Steve said, “Luton have got a big reputation for bringing young players through, but it was the same at Coventry where I started and that’s how I got my chance.

“As young players, you need to be ready because if the first-team gets five or six injuries then you could be in there.

“At the age of 16 or 17 you think you know it all – I know I thought I did – but it’s up to me to use my experience and help the young lads develop through.

“My job is to get the young lads who we can bring through to the first-team.  It’s great here how everyone loves coming in to work.  There is a real buzz around the place and it is good to be a part of that.”

Prior to joining Luton Town, Steve had taken a two-year break from the sport following his resignation as manager of Ryman Premier League side Kingstonian in December 2002 to spend more time with his family.  On leaving the K’s, Steve had led them to 10th place in the Ryman Premier League.

Steve said, “Things were getting a little difficult at Kingstonian because the club was in administration and all sorts of things were going on behind the scenes.

“I resigned and to a long story short, my wife and I decided to go off to Barbados and do something while the kids were still young.

“I have only been back in the country eight months and to get back into football so quickly is quite surprising because I know how difficult it can be.

“However, this is a good challenge for me and I am looking forward to the role.  I’ve known Mike Newell for a while now and when somebody like him offers you a job you don’t turn it down.”

Unfortunately for Steve - an ex-FA Cup winner with Spurs - his time at Kenilworth Road was short lived.  Manager Mike Newell was dismissed in early 2007 and new Hatters boss Kevin Blackwell brought in his own backroom staff, which meant that Steve's services were no longer required and he departed Kenilworth Road just a few weeks before his fellow Youth Team Coach Marvin Johnson was also dismissed under similar circumstances.
