An agile and competent young goalkeeper, Zac signed a three-year professional deal in June 2006 after progressing through the club's youth academy. The talented shot stopper found himself as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper for the 2006-07 season.A local lad from Hitchin, Zac was playing for Letchworth Garden City as a youngster and was spotted by a scout from the East Anglian Representative side. Called-up to represent East Anglia, Zac was spotted by a scout from the Hatters and was invited for a trial. His performances earned him a stay at Kenilworth Road and he represented the Hatters at Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Reserve team level on numerous occasions – the fact he made his debut for the Under-19 side at the age of just 14 was a testament to his ability.
Zac had done extremely well during the 2002-03 campaign as he appeared 5 times for the Hatters’ Under-17 side and a further 4 times for the Under-19 side after making his debut in a 2-1 win over Peterborough United in February 2003, despite being just 14-years-old – making him the youngest-ever player to represent Luton Town’s Under-19 side.
Zac continued his development with Luton Town during the 2003-04 season as he played 21 full matches for the Hatters’ Under-17 side, earning praise for his commandment of the box and excellent shot-stopping abilities.
He also appeared five times for the Under-19 side as he made his FA Youth Cup debut at the age of just 14 in a 0-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in October 2003.
A highly-rated young goalkeeper, Zac appeared for the first time at senior level in a pre-season friendly win at St. Albans City in July 2004 and, after fellow young goalkeeper Michael Eade was loaned out to Gillingham in September 2004, Zac was the club's fifth-choice goalkeeper behind Marlon Beresford, Dino Seremet, Dean Brill and Robert Beckwith. With Beresford and Beckwith injured at the start of October 2004, and Seremet playing in goal for the senior side, Zac travelled to Northampton Town for a Reserve team match as understudy to Brill. However, he wasn't expecting the 31st minute debut he would be given when Brill was forced to leave the field injured after a clash with a Cobblers striker.
Looking calm and assured for such a young player, Zac played an hour in goal and kept a clean sheet on his Reserve team debut to help the Hatters to a 3-0 win and he was also handed the number 35 squad number in October 2004 when he was named in the first-team squad for a 3-0 home victory over Hartlepool United.
He also had the rare pleasure of scoring in a match as he netted from a long goal kick in an 8-0 FA Youth Cup First Round victory over Whitstable Town in November 2004 at Kenilworth Road. He went on to make a total of 15 appearances during the 2004-05 season for the Hatters' Under-18 side and played a big part in their successful season.
After captaining the Youth Team in a 1-2 defeat at West Ham United's Upton Park in the FA Youth Cup, Zac was the only final Youth Team scholar to be offered a professional contract in February 2006. With the rest of the intake released, and Zac set to stay at Kenilworth Road, he looked set to have a bright future at Kenilworth Road. He celebrated this feat by appearing twice for the Reserves, as a substitute in a win over Oxford United, and a full appearance between the sticks as Stevenage Borough were thumped 6-1 at Kenilworth Road.
In March 2006, Zac penned a three-year professional contract with the Hatters to the delight of both manager Mike Newell and the Luton Town player/goalkeeper coach Marlon Beresford.
Upon being offered his professional contract, Beresford said, "I'm really pleased for Zac. He's worked hard and it's good news for him, particularly with so many of the young lads leaving. It's a shame we couldn't keep more on, but that's the manager's decision at the end of the day.
"Zac's got great potential, which is obviously why he's been taken on, and hopefully he'll go on to fulfil that."
A talented goalkeeper, Zac signed his three-year professional contract on June 29th 2006 – the same day that midfielder Peter Holmes and fellow youngster Chris Pendleton penned new one-year contracts.
Following the departures of fellow goalkeepers Robert Beckwith and Dino Seremet, Zac went into the 2006-07 season as Luton Town’s third choice goalkeeper behind Marlon Beresford and Dean Brill – at the age of just 18.
In November 2006, Zac was loaned to Nationwide Conference North side Kettering Town to gain some first-team experience.
A day after arriving at Kettering, he played in a 2-5 Northants Senior Cup defeat at Brackley Town when Kettering fielded a second string side.
He was due to play for Kettering in their FA Cup First Round clash with League One side Oldham Athletic the following weekend, but he was recalled to Kenilworth Road following Marlon Beresford’s sending off at Preston North End to provide backup to Dean Brill - his loan spell with Kettering ending after just one appearance.
A regular for the Reserve side once again during the 2006-07 campaign, things unfortunately took a turn for the worse for Zac as he spent the entire 2007-08 season on the sidelines due to a bad knee injury.
However, with a year left on his deal at Kenilworth Road, and back to full fitness for the start of the 2008-09 season, the talented young goalkeeper was hoping he could force his way back into the reckoning under new Hatters boss Mick Harford.
However, Luton Town seemed to have different ideas and, with money seemingly tight and the club in administration, Zac was one of a number of players who left the club after being offered terms to pay up the remainder of his contract.
The reason stated for Zac's departure was that the club could only afford to have one goalkeeper, and with Dean Brill between the sticks, it raised question marks over veteran Marlon Beresford's future as well at Kenilworth Road. It was a real shame as Zac had been with Luton Town since the age of 11.
With Zac's departure from Luton Town cited as down to finances rather than his undoubted ability, the decision to allow him to leave Kenilworth Road could well come back to haunt the Hatters.
Upon departing Luton Town, Zac played in pre-season for Boreham Wood, appearing for the Meadow Park-based side in their 2008 pre-season friendlies against Leyton and Arsenal.
He also appeared in a pre-season friendly for Hitchin Town, playing for the Canaries against Chesham United.
In late August 2008, Zac signed for Business Gas Premier Division side Cambridge City on a non-contract basis, making his debut in a 2-2 draw at Banbury United. He made an immediate impact, earning praise from manager Gary Roberts and becoming an instant fans' favourite, not least for his penalty saving exploits. He signed a deal to stay at Milton Road until the end of the 2008-09 campaign and firmly established himself as the Lillywhites' number one goalkeeper, making 51 appearances in all competitions and helping Cambridge City to the British Gas Business Football League Premier Division play-offs, where they were beaten by Gloucester City.
Attracting the interest of a number of Football League clubs and Blue Square Premier sides during the season, Zac was awarded the Junior Supporters' Player of the Season award, the Players' Player of the Season award and the Supporters' Player of the Season award and it does not look like it will be long before the young goalkeeper finds himself back in the Football League.
