LUTON EASE TO WIN ON PRE-SEASON TOUR OF SWEDEN... Luton began life after Steve Howard by proving they still had goals in the side after a comfortable win over Swedish opponents Bunkeflo IF. Two strikes in either half from Calvin Andrew, Dean Morgan, Michael Leary and Danny Stevens gave Mike Newell's men victory in the first of two games on their pre-season tour. The game was played out in quaint surroundings on the outskirts of Malmo in a ground more akin to Barton Rovers or Dunstable Town than anything Hatters will face in the Championship this season.
But Luton, being skippered by Chris Coyne due to the imminent departure of Kevin Nicholls, were still given a decent workout by a side sitting in fourth place at the half-way stage of their league, in the third tier of Swedish football. Sporting their new orange third kit, Luton started with Morgan and Andrew as a front two pairing and the duo combined well in the 12th minute when Andrew fed Morgan to curl a 22-yard effort just over the bar. Morgan repeated the favour eight minutes later when he slipped in Andrew, who tried to take the ball around the goalkeeper only for Ola Svensson make a smart save. "The breakthrough came just before the half-hour mark" The breakthrough came just before the half-hour mark when David Bell's deep cross rebounded fortunately off Martin Larsson for Andrew to make no mistake from close in.
The hosts' first real threat came in the 36th minute when lively winger Yidi Shabani cut inside Stephen O'Leary and Sol Davis from the right flank and hit a low 20-yard drive that Marlon Beresford did well to hold at his near post. "Two minutes later though Luton were 2-0 up" Two minutes later though Luton were 2-0 up when Beresford himself started a flowing move that took in Keith Keane and Leary before Bell crossed for Morgan to finish with a half-volley from 10-yards. Beresford ensured Hatters kept that advantage when seconds before the break he saved superbly from home skipper Erol Bekir's 15-yard drive and Keane completed the clearance off the line from Paul Munster's follow up. While Bunkeflo made five changes at the interval, Hatters kept faith with their starting 11 until the substitutions began in the 65th minute. Two of the players still on the field combined three minutes later, however, when Peter Holmes layed off for Leary to strike a 25-yard effort that crept into the bottom corner of the net for Town's third. Bunkeflo almost pulled one back when substitute Ken Hansson was unfortunate to see his curling 22-yard effort hit the top of the bar.
Instead, Stevens rounded things off nicely two minutes from time when he ran on to Ahmet Brkovic's slipped pass, rounded Svensson and fired into the empty net. The former Spurs trainee almost got another in stoppage time when he shot left footed from Brkovic's pull-back, but this time Svensson kept his effort out. Luton next play on Wednesday evening in Halliken with Steve Robinson, Markus Heikkinen and Carlos Edwards - who were all present, but didn't play against Bunkeflo - expected to feature.
