LATE LUTON SHOW STINGS THE BEES...

Late goals from Kevin Nicholls, substitute Enoch Showunmi and Steve Robinson in the last six minutes of the game saw Luton Town snatch a dramatic win over bogey club Brentford in their final home game of the season.

There was a party atmosphere at Kenilworth Road to celebrate the Championship of League One

There was a party atmosphere at Kenilworth Road.

With Luton being presented with the League One trophy after the end of the game, The Bees looked set to spoil the title party at Kenilworth Road as strikes from Sam Sodje and Deon Burton cancelled out Ahmet Brkovic's fifth minute opener.

But after twice hitting the post and seeing visiting goalkeeper Stuart Nelson make some outstanding saves, champions Luton were rewarded with an astonishing late flurry as Nicholls equalised from the spot in the 84th minute, Showunmi scored in the final minute and Robinson netted in stoppage-time.

The win avenged two defeats at the hands of Brentford earlier in the season and sets the Hatters up for a record 100 points finish to the season if they win their final game at Doncaster Rovers next week.

Luton made three changes to the side that won the League One title at Wrexham as Warren Feeney came in for Rowan Vine for his full Hatters debut, Robinson replaced Peter Holmes for his first Luton start since his hernia operation in February and Paul Underwood stepped in for Showunmi on the left of midfield.

A full house created a buzzing atmosphere as the Luton faithful saluted the champions. And the Hatters responded with a strong start that saw them go ahead in the fifth minute.

Feeney touched the ball for Underwood to cross and after Steve Howard had flicked on, Brkovic arrived at the far post to fire the ball into the ground and up and over visiting goalkeeper Nelson for his 16th goal of the season.

Marlon Beresford had to be alert to palm aside a 20-yard Stewart Talbot effort in the ninth minute before Howard headed Robinson's right-wing cross just wide three minutes later.

But Brentford began to make their aerial threat count and after Eddie Hutchinson had headed just over in the 17th minute, the Bees equalised in the 20th minute when Beresford could only half punch clear John Salako's centre from the left and Sodje headed home.

With their extra man in midfield beginning to count, the visitors went 2-1 ahead in the 26th minute when Michael Turner intercepted a Nicholls pass and ran unchallenged for 50-yards before playing in Burton to calmly slot past Beresford from just inside the penalty area.

Howard almost levelled after a determined run and pass from Sol Davis found the big man in space in the penalty area, but Howard's left footed shot from eight-yards ended up just the wrong side of the post.

After a quiet start to the game, Feeney burst into life in the 39th minute when he headed down a long Chris Coyne pass for Robinson to fire a 20-yard volley at Nelson and from the rebound Feeney was first to the ball, but blasted just past the post.

The Hatters started the second-half just as they had the first and they almost equalised two minutes in when Nicholls saw a curling free-kick from the edge of the penalty area bounce back off the post.

Steve Robinson celebrates making it 4-2.

Luton were denied again in the 55th minute when Robinson sent in a curling free-kick from the left and Howard pinged an effort at goal from four-yards that Nelson somehow kept out.

Nelson performed heroics again in the 66th minute as he dived acrobatically to his left to push aside a 10-yard Underwood volley from Howard's knock back.

Luton kept pushing, but once again they were thwarted when Howard's towering header from another Robinson free-kick in the 72nd minute seemed destined for the back of the net only to strike the post.

But for all the Hatters' pressure, Brentford almost went further ahead in the 76th minute when Sodje headed goal wards from Darren Pratley's corner only for Brkovic to clear off the line.

Howard then found himself in on goal three minutes later after Robinson's flick on the edge of the area, but the impressive Nelson was out quickly to smother at the Luton striker's feet.

The deserved equaliser finally came with six minutes remaining when Turner brought down Robinson in the box and Nicholls stepped up to net from the spot for his 13th goal of the season.

Luton snatched a dramatic winner in the 90th minute when Curtis Davies nodded on Robinson's corner and substitute Enoch Showunmi headed the ball home on the line.

There was still time for Robinson to grab a fourth in the third minute of added-on time when he sidefooted home substitute Vine's pull back from 15-yards to send the Luton fans wild with delight.

The victory - Luton Town's sixth in a row - put the Hatters 11 points clear of second-placed Hull City, meaning that whatever happens on the final day of the 2004-05 season, Luton Town will finish at least eight points ahead of The Tigers in the League One table.

At the end of the match, the Luton Town players lifted the League One Championship trophy amidst scenes of unforgettable joy and, after the players embarked on a lap of honour, the Luton Town fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the phenominal season. Finally, the Hatters players appeared in the Main Stand Directors' Box at Kenilworth Road to once again hold aloft the trophy for the thousands of delighted Hatters fans on the pitch.

It truly has been a memorable season for Luton Town Football Club.

Newell's Comments 30 April 2005

Luton Town 4-2 Brentford

Mike Newell

“We’re delighted to finish it off in style and we didn’t want it to go flat and at half-time it looked like it might just do that.

“Brentford have something to play for and they needed it more than us but in the second-half our lads were amazing and that’s just the way that the season has gone.

Newell and Nicholls lift the trophy.

“We have a belief in our players and if we can get it down and pass it, we can beat teams and we couldn’t do that in the first-half and we have lads on the bench who can come on and change a game.

“I think Brentford came out to defend what they had after half-time and they only left one up front, but that’s always a dangerous game.

“The win has made it everything because we didn’t want it to go flat and they can enjoy this now, it’s the last home game and we’ve had a great home record and a lot of that is down to the fans. I know what it means to them and I know what it means to the town.

“I think there is a bit of relief now amongst the players that it is all over and we’ve won the title and beaten Brentford today and we’ll see now with one game left if we can get the 100 points.

“Brentford had already beaten us twice and if anyone beats you three times in a season then something is wrong, but our lads wouldn’t give it up today and we’re proud of them. I very much doubt Luton will get 100 points in our lifetime again so it is a chance to write a little bit of history and put ourselves in the history books.

“This means everything to me – I am proud of the players and delighted to have worked with them. They’ve been professional, they’ve shown desire and they’ve shown a togetherness and a spirit I’ve never seen anywhere else.

“It is impossible to single anyone out. Everyone who has played for us this season and got changed in that dressing room has contributed in some way.

“We’ll have a good few drinks to celebrate tonight – how else! And it will probably go into tomorrow as well! The lads are going out together and I have a lot of family down, so I’ll be going out with them but I am sure at some stage in the evening we’ll all be meeting up!

"I am so pleased for the lads that all their hard work has paid off. We have worked hard all season and the lads truly deserve it.

"It's fantastic for the club and I am so proud to have been manager of this team. I am sure that the lads will remember this occasion and it is a great moment for everyone involved."
